A growing number of Quality of Worklife initiatives marked 1999 at BWH, including the introduction of a new Perks program providing BWH employees with discounts on goods and services including movies, events, cell phones, and wholesale club memberships. Quality of Worklife issues were also addressed in a number of Town Meetings, interactive sessions for staff and employees with President Jeffrey Otten, Chief Operating Officer Matthew Van Vranken, and Chief Medical Officer Anthony Whittemore, MD. The annual Street Beat Fair celebrated the diversity at BWH, and “On My Own Time” showcased the creativity and talent of the staff. Recognition programs expanded greatly with nearly 1,000 physicians and employees honored for their years of service, and over 600 recognized with Partners in Excellence Awards. Service Heroes like Judy Riley, Operating Room Clinical Support Services, above left, served as models of customer service, and 22 nurses received the Essence of Nursing Award. Nurses also unveiledthe Starfish program to recognize colleagues and co-workers who provide emotional support to patients.
