In January, Faulkner opened a ninth operating room. The additional OR is expected to accommodate 10 to 20 more surgical cases a week and allow BW/F surgeons to perform up to 900 more procedures each year.
Also in January, Faulkner expanded its Gastroenterology (GI) Suite to include a fourth room. In addition, the prepatory and recovery areas in the suite were renovated to better meet patient needs. According to Daniel Matloff, MD, chief of Gastroenterology at Faulkner, there has been an unprecedented demand for GI services at Faulkner over the last few years. In 2001, approximately 5,000 GI procedures were performed at Faulkner and 7,000 are projected for 2002. The increased volume has been primarily related to a dramatic growth in the number of colonoscopies performed, according to Matloff.
Minimally invasive back surgery is now offered at Faulkner. Thanks to the use of technology, smaller instrumentation and endoscopes, back surgery has grown less and less invasive over the last decade. Leading the back surgery at Faulkner is Eric J. Woodard, MD, chief of Spine Surgery in the Department of Neurosurgery at BWH.
Considerable progress has been made during the first 12 months of the integration of Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates (HVMA) into Faulkner Hospital. According to Joseph L. Dorsey, MD, director of HVMA’s Inpatient Medical Service at BW/F, approximately two-thirds of HVMA’s General Medicine patients have received their care at Faulkner, with HVMA hospitalists serving as their attendings. HVMA and Faulkner-based medical subspecialists have together assured access to high quality consultations when requested. “BWH medical housestaff have participated in the care of all these patients and a robust educational program under the leadership of Faulkner’s chief of Medicine Steven Wright, MD and BWH program director Joel Katz, MD,” said Dorsey.
