Senior surgical resident, Atul Gawande, was featured as one of Boston’s most intriguing young professionals on the Channel 5 television magazine show, Chronicle. The feature, which aired September 4, profiled Gawande along with an artist, filmmaker, lawyer and several other entrepreneurial Bostonians under the age of 40. Collectively, this eclectic, overachieving group comprised what Chronicle termed the City’s up and coming "young bloods."
In addition to his full time position as a BWH resident, Gawande contributes as a staff writer to the prestigious New Yorker magazine. In his capacity as a medical writer, who is also studying to be a surgeon, Gawande finds himself in a unique role. He is an important communication link between hospital operating rooms and peoples’ living rooms. Gawande’s articles cover complex medical topics that are not only difficult issues to grapple with, but even more challenging to convey in words to the average reader. Gawande, however, has found great success in this hybrid world of medical journalism.
According to Gawande’s mentor at BWH, Michael Zinner, MD, chair, Department of Surgery, Gawande’s writing can "influence the way the public looks at the field of medicine."
