BWH held it 21st Annual Service Awards Ceremony in the Cabot Atrium on Thursday, June 14 to honor employees who have provided five, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 years of service to the hospital. Each year, BWH celebrates these service milestones by presenting employees with awards and gifts of their choice based on their years of service.
Vice President of Human Resources Cheryl Locke, served as the event’s master of ceremonies. Locke greeted the attending awardees, their families and coworkers before introducing Matt Van Vranken, chief operating officer and Andy Whittemore, MD, chief medical officer.
“This evening is another way to thank you and show our appreciation for all of your efforts,” said Van Vranken.
“People ask me what the special ingredient is at BWH. My response to them is always, ‘it’s the people,’” added Van Vranken. “You set us apart from other institutions and make us the world-class institution that we are.”
“A heartfelt thanks go out to all of you for making it possible for the hospital to continually succeed in attaining its mission. Whether it is in education, research or patient care, each and every one of you make BWH less intimidating, less scary and more comfortable for our patients,” said Whittemore, before turning things back to Locke.
Van Vranken and Whit-temore joined Locke for the award presentations. Before announcing the employees under each increment of five years, Locke shared the milestones in pop culture, politics and BWH history pertinent at the time the employees began their BWH career.
Awardee Karen Flaherty, RN, nurse program manager, Comprehensive Breast Health Center, began her BWH career 25 years ago. “It seems like yesterday,” said Flaherty, who first worked at the Parkway Division of the Boston Hospital for Women.
Another employee recognized for 20 years of service is Brian Farrington, assistant director, Research Administration, who said, “It amazes me that I have been here so long.” Farrington started as an outpatient account representative in Accounts Receivable at Peter Bent Brigham. “I’ve been fortunate to have worked with many great people throughout my years at BWH.”
“BWH has supported me and my family for 35 years now,” said Giovanni “Gino” Capurso, plumbing supervisor, Engineering Department, who still has his first BWH pay stub from April 1966, as a momento.
“I love my job as it continues to bring new challenges and makes me flexible to change. It is a pleasure to work here,” added Capurso.
The highlight of the Service Awards Ceremony came when Mary Roddick, Operating Room, and Louis Andrade, Respiratory Services, were recognized for an honorable 40 years of service at BWH.
In addition to the Service Awards Ceremony, a celebratory dinner was held on June 19 at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel to honor employees who have served BWH for 20 or more years.
