In 2000, and for the seventh year in a row, BWH ranked second in research funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) among independent hospitals. The hospital received more than $162 million from NIH. MGH was the top funded hospital, receiving $180 million. BWH’s 2000 funding represented an increase of 10.9 percent over its 1999 total of $146 million. Among all institutions receiving NIH grants, BWH ranked 22nd. The hospital’s total research funding was more than $220 million. “The impressive growth of BWH research enterprise is continuing, and the hospital is well positioned for the future with the new research facility at University Park coming online in August, and space becoming available in 2003 at both Harvard’s and Children’s new research buildings currently under construction,” said Keith Marcotte, vice president, Research Administration. Dana-Farber Cancer Institute ranked third among hospitals, and McLean Hospital ranked 15th, the second highest among psychiatric hospitals. If all Partners hospitals, including Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, were regarded as a single research center, the grand total of $361 million would be second nationwide only to Johns Hopkins University at $419 million. All of the top five independent hospitals were Boston institutions affiliated with Harvard Medical School.
