Michael Cardona
Michael Cardona personifies BWH’s unwavering commitment to helping others. Cardona began his career at BWH by volunteering when he was 14 years old. Following his 34 years of paid employment in the Shipping and Housekeeping Departments, Cardona signed on to help for a different kind of compensation—the satisfaction of knowing that he made a difference. He is frequently seen on the Nesson Pike chatting with his many friends at every level of the organization. As a volunteer in the Pharmacy for the past three years, Cardona helps in any way needed. He has been a blood platelet donor 124 times in his life, and he actively encourages others to donate. Twenty four years ago, Cardona decided to participate in Project Bread’s Walk for Hunger. He has walked every year since, raising over $200,000 in pledges to feed the needy. While this in itself is a notable accomplishment, his physical challenges make his accomplishments exceptional. Michael Cardona represents the best in volunteer service at BWH.
Walter Davis
Walter Davis exemplifies the meaning of the Golden Rule. Davis has been volunteering at BWH for 13 years. His appointed station is at the front desk in the main lobby, which was known as the “doughnut” when he began. From the beginning, Davis demonstrated a special gift for comforting people. His quiet, soft-spoken style puts patients at ease, and gives them a sense that someone is willing to take time to help them. His kindness is evident, as he is always willing to sympathize with a patient’s situation and will help regardless of the effort required. He has responded to special requests on behalf of patients on countless occasions. Davis is able to solve problems through his extensive network of friends throughout the hospital. In his humble, steadfast and loving way, Walter Davis has made a significant difference in the lives of the patients, staff and volunteers at BWH.
