As mentioned in prior issues of Bulletin, an incentive program is being offered to better facilitate patient care and flow throughout the summer months. This program is not intended to reward employees, but rather to better meet the needs of our patients, as explained below. “Part of our Agenda for Change 2000 is growth. Because of our success with this component and solid relationships with referring physicians, our census is up,” said Matthew Van Vranken, chief operating officer. “This means that current staffing is not consistently meeting patient volume on the weekends,” he added. A short-term incentive program is being offered to resolve this. During the summer months the volume of patients traditionally slows, so that when staff and employees take summer vacations, the hospital is still sufficiently staffed. To ensure that patient care is not jeopardized, the hospital unveiled a summer incentive program two weeks ago for positions that directly support patient care. The program is currently being offered to registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, patient care associates, emergency services associates, nutrition assistants, unit coordinators, unit associates and escorts, surgical and anesthesia technicians, central processing technicians and supply clerks. Additional positions may be added as the program is reviewed. Employees in these positions who complete their regular weekly shifts and work voluntary, available extra shifts from Friday at 7 a.m. through Monday at 11 p.m. will be paid $150 for a 12-hour shift, $100 for an eight-hour shift, and $50 for a four-hour shift. This incentive has being initiated to ensure that BWH meets the needs of its patients.
