Message from Mary Fay, RN
Let me take this opportunity to offer my gratitude to the nurses of Brigham and Women's Hospital. As part of an exceptional team of caregivers, they have helped establish the forefront of quality patient care. During the month of May, we have a number of opportunities to celebrate the profession of nursing. As we reflect upon the contributions of the thousands of nurses here at BWH, we can understand the true humanizing aspects of our work. At BWH we have highlighted the contributions of our nurses through a variety of programs, such as the Essence of Nursing Awards and the Starfish Awards. Each of the recipients of these awards represents the best aspects of care. The characteristics of exceptional care involve strength, compassion, respect for our patients and each other, dignity and healing. In many respects, they do not differ greatly from what makes us each caring human beings. George Washington Carver once wrote: “How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and strong. Because someday in your life you will have been all of these.” Relating to our patients and their families, our nurses build upon the foundation of knowledge, skill and their own experiences to establish a framework of quality care. During May, and throughout the year, accept our thanks for the difference you make in the lives of our patients.
Nursing Recruitment Efforts
Recognizing the challenge of attracting top tier nurses in a competitive environment, BWH has taken an aggressive approach to recruiting qualified nurses to the hospital. Over the last year, Nursing and Human Resources have been developing and implementing a plan to recruit both experienced nurses and recent graduates of nursing programs. A series of nursing job fairs and open houses held and combined with recruiting efforts at nursing conferences around the country have successfully attracted many new nurses. In the months ahead, the HR/Nursing team plans to increase its recruitment efforts. “In addition to direct recruitment efforts by nurse recruiter Regina Cullen, HR Generalists, and members of Nursing Leadership, we have several creative programs in place to provide nurses with the support they need,” said Cheryl Locke, vice president, Human Resources. These initiatives include a summer per diem program to bring unit coordinators on board and a joint endeavor with Bunker Hill Community College to train and hire new patient care assistants (PCAs). To attract more people to the ICUs, Nursing has developed an ICU training program for both internal and external nurses. Said Locke, “We realize that our nursing staff is committed to providing the best care for our patients. By filling the nurse positions and supporting our nurses with other resources including PCAs and Unit Coordinators, we will take a significant step towards insuring that they can continue to give quality patient care.”
