It’s springtime once again at BWH. The signs of the season can be found everywhere—singing birds, blooming flowers, sunny skies, and cardiovascular health. That’s right: cardiovascular health. Spring is a time of fresh starts; and thanks to the second annual Boston Heart Party, women can make healthy new starts in their lives withfree heart screenings. The Boston Heart Party, a collaboration between Partners HealthCare, Pfizer Inc., and CareGroup Healthcare, works to raise awareness of women’s cardiovascular health by offering free heart screenings all over the Boston area for women ages 35 and over. The screenings—which began on the first day of spring, March 20; and will continue through Mother’s Day, May 14—include tests such as blood pressure measurement, cholesterol and glucose testing, and an individualized risk factor profile. Physician referrals are also available at the screenings. “Cardiovascular disease kills more American women than any other disease,” says Dr. Marie Gerhard, a BWH physician. “A little knowledge about the warning signs and effective treatment can help all women.” Thanks to the Boston Heart Party, women’s cardiovascular health statistics are already starting to improve. Last year, more than 3,000 Boston women were screened, with 44% were found to be at risk for heart problems. As a result of the screenings, 42% of all women screened took actions to improve their health.
