Walk for hunger
Michael Cardona has been a presence at BWH for 37 years. For the first 34, he worked in Environmental Services; and he has been a volunteer in the Outpatient Pharmacy for the last three. On May 7, he will join thousands of others on Project Bread’s annual Walk for Hunger, a 20-mile walk to raise money to feed the homeless. This will be his 23rd walk, and the generous donations of employees and staff—as well as those beyond BWH—already total $9,831 this year, bringing his 23-year grand total to $209,879. Cardona, who is partially paralyzed due to cerebral palsy, has for the first time agreed to use a wheelchair in the race because of joint pain and stiffness due to arthritis. For the third year in a row, Donald Blood, supervisor, Pharmacy, and Steve Pacetti, mail carrier, Mailroom, will join him. “Mike devotes a tremendous amount of time and energy to this project,” says Blood. “He does all the work, and I am just there to lend support.” “With the support of thousands of people at BWH, I’ve been able to help so many people,” Cardona said. “But hunger is a problem that doesn’t go away—people who can feed themselves this year might not be able to next year. It means a lot to me that so many people support me every year. I hope even more people will help in the future the money we raise makes a real difference to many many people.” Pledges made for the Walk for Hunger must be submitted to Cardona by June 30.
