BWH Bulletin's year-end issue is a time to reflect on BWHers' proudest moments from the past year. We asked you to share one BWH-related memory from 2013 that was meaningful to you, and you generously offered stories about colleagues, patients, families, events and milestones that continue to inspire you. We hope you enjoy reading these moments.
When I learned this week that one of my longest-term patients had passed away, the following memory came to mind immediately.
In June of this year, this patient came in for a routine visit. Her health had been failing and she was no longer able to do some of the things she loved so well, leaving her quite sad and down in the dumps.
I knew her birthday was in two days and that she had no living family members left to mark the occasion with her. Prior to her visit, I asked other staff members if they would be willing to sing "Happy Birthday" to her with me.
When her appointment was finished and her aide was wheeling her out of the exam room, my little "Flash Mob" and I sang "Happy Birthday." Initially, she looked up in disbelief, but then she smiled like I had never seen her smile before. Every one of us, including her aide, had a lump in our throats and a tear in our eyes. Something so simple had brought her great joy. I will never forget it, and I'm so glad we did this. It was truly a shining moment for me and everyone who participated.
