The Osher Center's Arthur Madore, LMT, performs "movement integration" on a NICU staff member on Wellness Day.
Last month, Osher Clinical Center staff visited the BWH NICU to provide staff with their very own Wellness Day-a one-of-a-kind employee program offering massages, acupuncture, craniosacral therapy and other innovative clinical interventions.
Simon Manning, MD, director of the Perinatal Palliative Care Program, said that the idea came from his team's recognition of the physical and emotional toll that caring for very sick patients takes on staff members.
"It is important for staff to be at their best if they are to be effective caregivers," he said. "We believe that it's also important for caregivers to recognize their own stress and learn about techniques and resources for self-care and renewal."
And so, thanks to the efforts of Osher Center alternative medicine practitioners, BWH's Reiki volunteers and Dana-Farber Zakim Center massage therapist volunteers, the program was born. The Osher Center hopes to hold another Wellness Day soon, specifically in the late evening so that evening and night staff can benefit from the event.
