When colleagues describe the qualities of physician assistants (PA) Danielle Bowers, PA-C, and Laurel Taylor, PA-C, a few phrases come to mind: "Superb leadership," "compassionate patient care," "excellent work ethic," "a true professional," and most of all, "a deep commitment to advancing the PA profession."
For exhibiting these qualities day in and day out, Bowers and Taylor were honored with 2013 Physician Assistant Recognition Awards during the annual PA Recognition dinner earlier this month. The celebration recognizes the contributions of all PAs from across BWH, BWFH and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI).
Bowers is a PA at the Breast Oncology Center at DFCI, where she provides clinical support to the practices of physicians Craig Bunnell, MD, and Ian Krop, MD.
"I am always impressed by the level of work she gets done on administrative tasks while still maintaining a full clinic schedule and family life outside of work. It is truly inspiring," wrote Ian Nagus, PA-C, chief PA for Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's Cancer Center (DF/BWCC) Inpatient Services and one of many colleagues who nominated Bowers for the award.
Rahila Valentim, an administrative assistant who also nominated Bowers, said: "She makes everyone feel appreciated. By giving us a card on Administrative Professionals' Day or by simply dropping us an email to say ‘thank you' for doing a good job, she always expresses her appreciation for us."
Taylor is the chief PA in the BWH Cardiac Arrhythmia Service. Her role as a care provider, colleague and mentor draws the respect and admiration of many around her.
Laurel Taylor
"I have been a PA in cardiology for the last 11 years and have worked with many PAs at top-notch institutions over that time, but I can honestly say that Laurel is one of the best PAs I have ever worked with," wrote Jeffrey Voner, PA-C, in her nomination. "She has a vast knowledge base, is very efficient in her work and is a very caring clinician."
Taylor's supervising physician, William Stevenson, MD, director of the Cardiac Arrhythmia Service, said: "When problems arise, Laurel takes it upon herself to resolve them, always putting the patient first. Her efforts undoubtedly improve the delivery of patient care and put the best face of the Brigham forward."
