Paul Farmer Book Reading
Paul Farmer, MD, PhD, will discuss his new book To Repair the World: Paul Farmer Speaks to the Next Generation, May 2, 7–9 p.m., at the First Parish Church, 1446 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge. Farmer’s new book is a collection of speeches by the charismatic doctor and social activist. Tickets are $5, which serves as a coupon to purchase the book. Kessler Library Event
Houman Javedan, MD, of the Division of Aging, will present “I am over 70 and I need surgery: What should I watch out for? What can I expect?” April 16, noon–1 p.m., in the Kessler Health Education Library. Javedan will discuss the risk and benefits of undergoing surgery after age 70. Health Professions Education
The deadline to apply for the MGH Institute of Health Professions Master of Science in Health Professions Education September 2013 cohort is May 1. Specifically designed for the expert clinician who already teaches, this program provides a unique context to study educational best practices in an interprofessional setting. Learn and Teach About Asthma
“Learn and Teach the Asthma Basics,” presented by Christopher Fanta, MD, and Jacqueline Rodriguez-Louis, MPH, MEd, is May 11, 8:30 a.m.–2:15 p.m., in the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center. This continuing education program is open to all, but is specifically designed for patient care assistants, medical assistants, outreach workers, childcare providers and nurses. Rape Aggression Defense
Learn realistic self-defense tactics, including hands-on defense training, risk reduction and risk avoidance information, during a four-class program hosted by MASCO. Classes meet Mondays beginning April 22, 6–9 p.m. These classes are for women, and students should attend all classes, which will be held at Children’s Hospital, 1 Autumn St. Building.
