BWH has championed many projects across the hospital and its distributed campus that create a more accessible, comfortable environment for patients with disabilities.
The most recent improvements include the revamping of Radiology’s outpatient reception desk. The new and improved desk is height friendly for all BWH patients, and opens up the entire waiting area, said Janet Razulis, administrative director of Clinical and Operational Programs, who is leading the hospital-wide disability access initiative.
Additionally, the once-narrow entrances to the Pulmonary and Thoracic suites at 15 Francis St. were renovated to provide more space for patients using wheelchairs.
“We are constantly surveying our entire campus for areas and ways we can improve, so that BWH continues to be a welcoming place for all of our patients,” Razulis said. “We know these improvements are important to our BWH community of care providers, patients and families.”
Since 2009, BWH’s disability access improvements have included the addition of eight wheelchair-accessible inpatient rooms and bathrooms, the purchase of more than 100 height-adjustable exam tables and the installation of portable patient lifts and wheelchair-accessible scales. BWH has also made most restrooms throughout the distributed campus wheelchair-accessible, as well as installed power-operated doors throughout campus and height-adjustable podiums in lecture halls.
Next month, accessible dining tables will be added in the BWH Cafeteria. BWH also offers hospital-wide training on disability awareness and sensitivity for all staff and providers through HealthStream.
