When weather reports began predicting record-breaking temperatures for Marathon Monday, BWH quickly teamed up with the Boston Athletic Association and other local agencies to ensure that runners suffering from the effects of the heat would receive the medical attention they needed. BWH’s Emergency Department, which dedicated its Bravo Pod to care for marathon patients, received a total of 26 runners over the course of Monday afternoon.
“Each one of our marathon patients shared their gratitude for the care they received,” said
Heidi Crim, RN, nursing director of the ED.
Staff in departments throughout the hospital worked together to ensure that operations ran smoothly. Food Services made ice and energy drinks readily available, and Lab Services ensured a quick turn-around time for key blood results that were needed for patient care. Admitting coordinated admission flow to ensure beds were available. Many other departments contributed to the hospital’s efforts as well.
“Our planning efforts and teamwork were key in our ability to respond to the influx of patients we experienced later in the afternoon,” said Barry Wante, director of BWH Emergency Management Center for Emergency Preparedness. “Thank you to all those involved in making our response to the marathon very successful.”
