Next week, BWH celebrates the 36th annual National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week to recognize lab staff at BWH, who play a critical role in patient care.
Medical laboratory professionals work in many highly specialized laboratories at BWH, including the Blood Bank, Hematology, Chemistry, Immunology, Microbiology, Reproductive Endocrinology, Tissue Typing, Cytology, Cytogenetics, Molecular Diagnostics, Surgical Pathology and Histology, as well as Phlebotomy and Lab Control.
“National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week is a special time to recognize and celebrate our collective achievements from the past year, and honor our teams for their hard work and dedication,” said James Pepoon, administrative director of Clinical Operations and Planning.
“For our lab staff, it’s a time to come together and share in both the uniqueness and similarities of each laboratory discipline.”
Lab staff provide quality test results that are vital to prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Most of their work is performed behind the scenes without direct patient contact.
As part of the celebration for National Laboratory Professionals Week, lab staff are invited to a breakfast, an ice cream social, a book swap and a laboratory bake-off contest. The labs are also participating in “Take Your Children to Work Day” April 26. Tours of individual labs will be scheduled for parents and children to learn about how each lab runs different kinds of tests.
