A team of clinical compliance professionals from Massachusetts General Hospital, Newton-Wellesley Hospital and North Shore Medical Center arrived at BWH bright and early March 2 to conduct a mock Joint Commission survey and find out whether BWH staff are prepared for the upcoming unannounced survey.
By the time the surveyors left at the end of the day, they had observed the way patients openly raved about their care, the friendliness and compassion of staff and a commitment among BWHers to follow policies and guidelines. They also identified several opportunities for improvement. “Overall, we’re very pleased with the results of the mock survey, and how staff interacted with the surveyors,” said Kelly Schoppee, director of BWH Clinical Compliance. “We want to continue to make sure that staff are always ready for every patient.”
The window for the unannounced visit from The Joint Commission is open; the survey will occur sometime between now and Feb. 6, 2013.
The mock survey was part of BWH’s continual readiness plan and an opportunity to test departments’ notification plans and actions as if it were a real Joint Commission visit. In order to do that, compliance officers from within the Partners HealthCare system are helping to run practice surveys at their sister hospitals to enhance the mock survey experience.
The surveyors visited outpatient sites, including the Weiner Center for Preoperative Evaluation, the Watkins Cardiovascular Clinic and the Lee Bell Center for Breast Imaging, in addition to several inpatient units. They carefully examined medication management, the environment of care, and observance of the Universal Protocol and infection control measures.
