Supporters, colleagues, champions and friends of the Leadership Competencies for Managers (LCM) program gathered last month to celebrate the graduation and achievement of the most recent class. The LCM is a nine-month intensive program for managers who are known throughout the hospital for living the mission and vision of BW/F. Nominated by their directors and vice presidents, once enrolled in the program participants begin a learning adventure that focused on leadership behaviors, team dynamics, change management and influence. The final three months of the program were dedicated to putting their new skills to work by completing a project and presenting recommendations to senior leadership.
“It is a comprehensive leadership experience that gives our next generation of leaders the key business and competency-based skills to enhance their effectiveness in leadership,” said Lianne Crossette, lead organizational development and learning consultant in the BWH Human Resources. “As program manager and facilitator of the LCM program, I can honestly say that I have never met a more committed group of leaders. They didn’t miss a beat.”
The program required participants to balance current job duties, home life and program responsibilities that included 150 classroom hours, countless evenings on Sharepoint, lunch hours on project work, coming into work early and leaving late.
“This graduation day was indeed a day to inspire others and celebrate a job well done,” said Crossette.
One recent graduate is Christian Gonzalez, operations supervisor in the Interpreter Services. “What I found most helpful from participating in this program was that I was able to examine myself as a manager and leader,” said Gonzalez, who has been at BWH for five years. “I was able to learn how others perceive me, and this motivated me to be more open and accessible to my staff.”
Working on the final project was one aspect that graduate Michelle Keenan, director of Community Programs in the Center for Community Health and Health Equity, enjoyed most about the program. “It’s a unique experience that teaches you first-hand how to work with other hospital leaders towards a common goal,” said Keenan.
Graduates expressed gratitude for the institutional support they received from BW/F leadership over the past year.
“It concretely demonstrates some impressive forward thinking about organizational leadership. It means a great deal to me as a participant, and I know that is true for others also, ” Keenan said.
The 2012 LCM cohort will be launching in April. For more information, contact Lianne Crossette at 617-582-0116.
