Madison Park Vocational Technical High School sophomore Maria Soto, 15, has always been curious about what life working at a hospital is like.
“It seems like a really good job, and people really care about helping people,” she said. Last week, Soto got a firsthand look at what a career in health care entails as one of the participants of BWH’s Job Shadow Day.
As part of a Boston Private Industry Council (PIC) initiative, BWH participated in the city’s annual Groundhog Job Shadow Day for the 17th year, hosting 12 students from Madison Park VoTech on Feb. 3.
During the day, students shadowed professionals in the areas of Nursing, Pathology, Cardiovascular Medicine and Community Health and Health Equity’s Student Success Jobs Program. Along with Soto, Rebecca Mondesir, 16, spent her day in the Center for Nursing Excellence where the two learned about applying to nursing school and the many types of careers available to them. Both students got an opportunity to practice nursing skills, such as checking blood pressure and administrating medications in the Nursing Simulation Lab.
“I’ve always liked helping people and being a nurse is something that I want to do,” said Mondesir. “Spending time here and seeing the things nurses do everyday is really cool.”
Soto and Modesir were hosted by Center for Nursing Excellence Educator Carol Luppi, BSN, RN, ALM. BWH Special Event Coordinator Carlen Singmaster, who coordinates the program, said the success of the event was due to the willingness of so many BWHers to be mentors for a day.
“A big thank you to all of our hosts for taking the time to inspire these students and make a difference in their future,” she said.
