When a 14,000-square-foot simulation center opens at the SRM University Teaching Hospital in Chennai, India, next year, a piece of its success will be traced back thousands of miles to BWH.
Four SRM physicians this fall spent nearly two months at BWH’s STRATUS Center for Medical Simulation, learning about the latest technology and the safest approaches to teaching medical procedures, as well has how to run a top-notch simulation center.
“With the cognitive knowledge, procedural leadership and teamwork skills that our physicians learned at STRATUS, there is no doubt in my mind that our simulation center will become a success in Chennai,” said Rajavelu Thirumavalavan, MD, chief of the SRM’s Department of Critical Care and Clinical Toxicology.
Through a partnership with Partners International Medical Services, the SRM physicians were introduced to simulation-based medical education theory. During their fellowship, they developed the skills necessary to identify curriculum needs, create robust curricula, integrate simulation technology into their curricula and became adept at educating using medical simulation. They learned how to use and maintain the simulators from the simulation specialists working at STRATUS. They were exposed to curricula used by a variety of disciplines including anesthesiology, medicine, neonatology, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, critical care, trauma and emergency medicine.
This kind of collaboration and education with clinicians from around the globe has been offered at STRATUS since its inception. The center has hosted clinicians from Japan, Korea, Israel and Kazakhstan, to name just a few.
STRATUS Medical Director Chuck Pozner, MD, said he was pleased the center and its staff were part of something special happening on the other side of the world.
“Their success is our success,” Pozner said. “Sharing our expertise and helping them build a solid foundation not only ensures future success, but it is also essential to achieve high standards of quality care everywhere around the world.”
