The BWH Burn Team once again is taking advocacy for burn victims and their families beyond the walls of BWH as it prepares for the fourth annual walkathon to benefit the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors next month.
“Every year, with the help of our colleagues, our team continues to grow and make a huge difference in the lives of burn survivors,” said Laura Garren OTR/L, senior occupational therapist, who will be part of the team taking on the 5K walkathon Sunday, Oct. 4.
The walkathon benefits the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors, a national nonprofit organization that provides peer support, education, collaboration and advocacy for burn survivors through a variety of programs, including Survivors Offering Assistance in Recovery (SOAR), which pairs burn patients with survivors for emotional support.
Last year’s BWH Burn Team was among the top teams and raised more than $1,000. In total, the Phoenix Society raised $28,000 from the event, which helps fund an array of services including awarding scholarships for burn survivors and health care professionals to attend the annual World Burn Congress. This summer, more than 40 burn survivors from New England attended the conference, and many received scholarships from Boston area donors and sponsors.
This year, the BWH team expects to surpass its $2,000 goal. The New England Regional Walk for Burns begins at 10 a.m. in the American Legion Marsh Post #442 Gerry’s Landing, Cambridge.
