NICU graduate families and staff were among 5,000 walkers for the March of Dimes Walk.
The NICU Strollers entered this year’s Boston March of Dimes Walk with two goals: match or surpass last year’s fund-raising total and recruit more members. Mission accomplished.
Raising just shy of $22,000 and recruiting more than 50 members, the NICU Strollers marked another successful year helping the March of Dimes continue its mission of preventing birth defects, premature births and infant mortality.
“This success couldn’t be possible without the help of so many here at BWH and the parents who are committed to making a difference,” said Paul Hughes, administrator for Newborn Medicine and a member of the March of Dimes Board of Directors.
This year, the NICU Strollers team included NICU graduate families, physicians, nurses and physical therapists. Other teams affiliated with BWH included those from Newton-Wellesley Hospital, MGH, North Shore Medical Center and Children’s Hospital. BWH’s Marketing and Perks departments provided goodies for those stopping by the BWH tent.
The Strollers were among about 250 teams participating in the three-mile walk around the Charles River Esplanade. March of Dimes officials estimate that 5,000 walkers raised $605,000 in total.
Since its inception in 1970, the foundation has raised $1.8 billion, with most of the funds from the walk supporting research and programs that help moms maintain full-term pregnancies and babies begin healthy lives. Last year, March of Dimes granted $87 million for research; about $6.5 million of that supports research conducted in Massachusetts.
“We went a long way toward the goal of giving every baby a healthy start last month,” said Hughes. “We can’t wait to get started planning for next year’s walk.”
