During a “60 Minutes” themed event in Palm Beach, BWH leaders shined a spotlight on the groundbreaking research conducted at BWH’s Biomedical Research Institute (BRI).
“Without research, there can be no effective treatments, no cures,” said BWH President Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA, during last month’s dinner for BWH’s generous donors and supporters at The Breakers Hotel. “BWH’s legacy in research has made a significant impact on world health.”
More than 800 principal investigators and 1,000 research fellows who support them contribute to landmark trials in heart disease, the pioneering Nurses’ Health Study and many other research areas. “I bet every one of them grew up hoping to find a cure for something and to make a difference in the world,” Gottlieb said. “They bring ingenuity, fortitude and vision to our medical research efforts.”
During the dinner, donors watched video segments highlighting research on Vitamin D, C-reactive protein and nanotechnology. In a humorous parody of CBS commentator Andy Rooney, BWH’s own “Andy,” Chief Medical Officer Andy Whittemore, MD, wrapped up the video segment with his take on “why hospital gowns are made the way they are.”
Barbara Bierer, MD, senior vice president of Research at BWH, was among more than 200 people in attendance, including members of the research community. “This event really celebrated the important work of so many researchers at the Brigham whose dedication to better understand, prevent and cure diseases is truly changing the way care is delivered,” she said.
Gottlieb thanked the many donors gathered at the dinner. “It is acts of great philanthropy that enable our vibrant community of physicians, researchers, nurses, medical students and health professionals to achieve great things,” he said. “We could not do it without you.”
