The culmination of years of planning, dedication and teamwork came Monday evening as hospital leadership and staff from Brigham and Women’s and Mass General, the Kraft family, civic leaders and friends gathered to cut a ceremonial ribbon marking the opening of the Brigham and Women’s/Mass General Health Care Center at Patriot Place.
“This center is part of our commitment to our community of patients and a chance to extend our hand of care closer to where our patients live,” said BWH President Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA, during the celebration, adding that more than 35,000 current patients of BWH and MGH live in the Foxborough area. “If we can save a patient a trip to Boston, that is one of our goals.”
Robert Kraft, chairman and CEO of the Kraft Group, toured the center with his wife Myra, greeting staff and remarking on the facility, which overlooks Gillette Stadium and is surrounded by shops, restaurants and a movie theater. “With Patriot Place, we didn’t want a traditional retail environment; we wanted it to be something special,” he said. “People come from all over the world to these two great institutions, Brigham and Women’s and Mass General. We realized we had the opportunity, in some small way, to bring them to this area.”
Jonathan Kraft, president and COO of the Kraft Group, added, “Our idea with Patriot Place was to take a location that people from all over New England know as a destination and turn it into something unlike anything else in New England, drawing visitors 365 days a year instead of just 10 times a year.”
The four-story, state-of-the-art facility offers Primary Care, General Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Sports Medicine, Rehabilitation Services, Cardiology, Cardiac Diagnostics, Dermatology, Diagnostic Imaging, Women’s Imaging (including digital mammography, breast ultrasound and bone density measurement in the near future), Rheumatology, Pain Management and Physiatry.
The nearly 400 guests at the opening celebration, and the many community physicians who visited Jan. 26 during an open house for medical staff, marveled over the indoor, heated pool with a submerged treadmill in Rehabilitation Services, the 3.0-Tesla MRI system in Diagnostic Imaging and the 16 bays for recovery for patients in Day Surgery.
Michael Zinner, MD, chief of Surgery at BWH, along with Stan Ashley, MD, vice chair of Surgery, and team, performed the first surgery—a hernia operation—in one of the four operating rooms Monday morning. “The surgical staff includes some of our senior surgeons, who have seen many patients from this area in Boston,” Zinner said. “By having both consultation and OR time at this new center, our surgeons will be able to treat patients closer to their homes.”
Peter Slavin, MD, MBA, president of MGH, spoke of the importance of teamwork in the creation of the new center. “What better place to talk about teamwork than 100 yards from Gillette Stadium,” he said. “The same spirit of teamwork permeates all of Partners HealthCare.”
Sharon Vitti, vice president of BWH Clinical Services, Women’s Health and Ambulatory, thanked all those involved. “The amount of time, dedication and unwavering commitment it takes to bring something like this to life is truly amazing,” she said. “Thank you to the hundreds of people who have made this possible.”
