BWH salutes the 47 physician assistants (PAs) working at BWH, supporting physicians in their quest to be timely and effective in rendering patient care. National Physician Assistants Day was October 6.
“Physician assistants play a very important role here at BWH,” said Chief Medical Officer Anthony Whittemore, MD. “Looking forward, these professionals are likely to take on even greater responsibilities as they support physicians during the reduction in hours among residents.” Licensed professionals who provide patient care services that otherwise would be performed by a physician, PAs perform a wide variety of services, including taking patient medical histories, performing physical examinations, ordering and interpreting lab tests, diagnosing and treating illnesses, assisting in surgery and writing prescriptions.
Physician assistants at BWH are concentrated in Surgery and Medicine, with 11 in Cardiac Surgery; five in Thoracic Surgery; five in Neurosurgery, five in Interventional Cardiology, five in Non-Invasive Cardiology, four in Metabolic Support Services, three in Congenital Heart Disease, two in each General/GI Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Interventional Radiology, Neurology, and one in Vascular Surgery.
