Forget the white coats and stethoscopes. When Keith Lockhart needs Jo Shapiro, MD, of BWH Otolaryngology/Surgery, and Joseph Dorsey, MD, of Hospital Medicine for Faulkner/ Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates, on a moment's notice, he cares only that his newest “On Call Maestros” are equipped with their conducting batons.
The two were among four other Partners physicians performing on stage at Symphony Hall during the 8th annual Partners Night at the Pops: A Celebration in Honor of Our Physicians on June 25.
The doctors competed in the “DocSearch” segment to become the next “On Call Maestro,” a back-up conductor for Keith Lockhart, by conducting songs related to their medical specialties.
BWH Cardiac Surgeon Lawrence H. Cohn, MD served as one of two judges for the competition. Cohn also had the pleasure of sharing a humorous moment on stage with Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino, before the mayor led the orchestra in “Stars and Stripes Forever.”
The six physicians were deemed equally qualified to conduct the orchestra and received conducting batons autographed by Lockhart.
