Travis Matheney and Michele Walters are on Team Brigham.
Michele Walters, MD, and Travis Matheney, MD, are like a team within Team Brigham, motivating each other to stay on track with training and fundraising. As husband and wife, the pair trains together since their busy schedules often make it impossible for them to participate in team training runs.
"It's hard to make the distance runs with the team because of our on-call and rounding responsibilities, but we run together on weekends," said Walters, a second year Radiology resident at BWH. Matheney was a resident in Orthopedics at BWH last year and now is a fellow at Children's Hospital.
"Michele got me through last year's marathon, and I would readily attest to her incredible motivation and strength when she's yanking me out of bed in the wee hours to train," Matheney said.
Both seasoned runners, Walters and Matheney chose this year to run the Boston Marathon with Team Brigham because they feel especially connected to BWH and admire the team's mission: to raise $500,000 for community health programs run by BWH.
This year's Boston Marathon will be Walters' fifth marathon and Matheney's third. They'll celebrate completing the race with a trip to London to visit Walters' family, who live there.
Cheer on Walters, Matheney and the other 131 members of Team Brigham on Monday, April 17, as they take on the grueling 26.2-mile course from Hopkinton to Copley Square. Team Brigham's official cheering spot will be outside of An Tua Nua at 835 Beacon St.
