Just beyond the door to the Nutrition Consultation Service, the out-patient arm of Nutrition Services where Brenda Scott serves as the secretary and receptionist, the noises of the busy Ambulatory Services fill the air. But inside, Scott, this month’s Service Hero makes patients and co-workers feel at home. The dietitians here see patients whose hypertension or diabetes mean they need to make changes in their diet—changes that can seem daunting at first. “When a new patient first arrives, they can be scared or depressed, and so I smile at them and listen to them. I think seeing a caring face really helps them at a time like that,” says Scott. “I’m the first one they see, and I try to help them relax.” Scott earned her degree in business management and worked in the banking industry for many years. Medical problems then kept her from working, and when she took the position in Nutrition two years ago it was largely because she was interested in the billing aspect. She says, “I never imagined I’d work in a hospital. Since I spent so much time in the hospital as a patient, I know what it’s like. I can relate to our patients, and that’s important to me and important to my work. The most rewarding thing about being here is working with the patients, and I plan to do it for many years to come.” Her commitment to the patient doesn’t end when she goes to lunch or leaves for home. If she sees someone in the hall who looks lost or confused, she stops to see if she can help and often escorts them to their destination. “It’s just part of what I do as a member of the Brigham community,” she says. Her co-workers see her dedication to her work. Connie Roberts, Registered Dietitian, nominated Scott for the Service Heroes Award because “she takes her role very seriously and takes pride in serving the patients. She has an amazing ability to juggle anxious patients, phones ringing, and staff-members asking for help while keeping everyone content. You know, you can do your job or you can do your job well. Brenda does hers well.” The Service Heroes Program recognizes staff, employees, and volunteers who demonstrate excellent customer service skills with patients, families, visitors, and co-workers. Award winners are presented with a framed Certificate of Appreciation, a pin, and a $100 gift certificate as a token of appreciation for their good work.
