Ask Yourself: What Is Your Role in Risk Management?
Health care risk management focuses on identification, evaluation and treatment of problems that arise while providing medical treatment that might result in a patient’s injury and health care providers’ potential financial loss. The main objectives of risk management include improving the quality of care provided to patients, promoting a patient-safe environment, and preventing or minimizing adverse effects for both patients and employees. BWH employees have two major roles in risk management: • Responding to adverse patient events in an appropriate and timely manner and reporting those events to the Risk Management Department • Developing and using strategies aimed at preventing medical errors and professional liability claims The Risk Management Department investigates and reviews adverse patient events and assists in identifying quality improvement issues. In addition, the Risk Management Department fulfills the hospital’s obligation to report certain patient events to both state and federal regulatory agencies. Contact the Risk Management Department at ext. 6442 for additional information.
