Eva Neer, MD, passed away on Sunday, February 20, after a lengthy and courageous battle with breast cancer. Dr. Neer was a gifted scientist and a distinguished member of the faculty of the Department of Medicine and the BWH Research Council. Among her many achievements, she was the first female Professor of Medicine at BWH. Her scientific accomplishments brought her world renown. Dr. Neer was a valued and devoted mentor. She exhibited a deep passion both for her science and for the arts and an equally profound compassion for her colleagues, students, and those fortunate enough to have trained with her. She was a model of the basic medical investigator and represented the best of the BWH tradition of science in the service of medicine. Dr. Neer was a member of the Institute of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She was active in undergraduate education at Harvard College and served for many years as a member of the Board of Tutors in Biochemical Sciences at Harvard, as well as serving on the Harvard Student Research Committee at Harvard Medical School. An NIH MERIT award recipient, her research focused on understanding the molecular basis for cellular responses to external signals and analyzing the function of G proteins. She served as an advisor to the NIH in several important posts, having chaired the Board of Scientific Counselors of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. Dr. Neer had remained active in all aspects of her professional life until last weekâshe attended a meeting of the national Advisory Council of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences only a few weeks ago and was actively working in her lab until two days before her passing. Dr. Neer was a great friend and colleague to many at BWH and HMS and will be deeply missed. Her family is planning a private funeral and will arrange a memorial service in a few weeks.
