Teen Health Center Celebrates
Last fall the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) dedicated a special issue to the health risks associated with obesity. Controlling and maintaining weight at an appropriate level can be challenging and can require significant motivation. One such motivating tool is BWH/Faulkner Hospital’s Program for Weight Management. The program, designed for those who are 20 or more pounds overweight, offers a variety of weight loss treatments at three interchangeable clinics at BWH and Faulkner. “Patient convenience has to be the focus for a successful program,” said Malcolm Robinson, MD, director of the program, who explained that treatment flexibility and accessibility are key. Weekly treatment is provided by a comprehensive team of weight management and nutrition experts composed of physicians, psychologists, surgeons, physician assistants, registered dietitians, and exercise physiologists. To maximize the weight loss success of each client, expert clinicians work with individuals to identify the appropriate treatment regimen. Options include nutrition counseling, exercise, behavior modification, prescription medication, or surgery. Weekly appointments are offered at both BWH and Faulkner Hospital at different times to match clients’work schedules and lifestyles: BWH campus Tuesdays, 7-9 a.m., Wednesdays, 5-8 p.m.,
Faulkner Hospital campus Tuesdays, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Since its start in August 1998, the program’s clientele now totals 100 and continues to grow each week with four to eight new clients. According to Dr. Robinson, feedback and data analysis of clients’ weight loss indicate the Program for Weight Management is effectively helping clients achieve and more importantly maintain safe weight loss. Brigham and Faulkner employees who are interested in getting a jump-start on losing those extra 20 pounds or more can call 732-8500 for more information on the Program for Weight Management or to schedule a free initial consultation.
