Nancy King McDermott, MS, RN, nursing administrator at BWH, passed away on October 18 at her home after a long illness. A forty-year employee of the hospital, she is survived by her husband, Paul, daughter, Kara, son, Douglas, and twin sister, Marion King Lewis, who is also a nurse. Nancy's parents and her brother, Arthur, are deceased. A graduate of the Peter Bent Brigham School of Nursing, McDermott received a bachelor's degree in nursing from Boston University and a master's degree in nursing administration from Northeastern University. She held various leadership nursing roles at BWH, most recently as an off-shift nursing administrator. “Nancy's unique personal and professional attributes were greatly valued at BWH. Her positive spirit, quiet humor, compassion, leadership and respect for the dignity of patients and coworkers are what we will miss most,” said Mary Fay, MS, RN, executive director, Center for Excellence in Nursing Practice. “We extend our thoughts and prayers to her family and close friends here and outside the hospital during this difficult time.” Funeral services are private, but a memorial service is being planned for Monday, November 6 at 5 p.m. in the Bornstein Amphitheater at BWH to which all are welcome. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Center for Excellence in Nursing Practice at BWH. For more information, call Debra Coleman at ext. 5218.
