Celebrating new faces at BWH
"Thank you for calling BHW."
FY 01 starts with a $2 million gift One of the largest charitable donations made to BWH follows the close of another record-setting year for the hospital’s fundraising efforts, which also involve planning the most ambitious capital campaign in the hospital’s history. The first seven-figure gift this year is a $2 million contribution from Neil and Elise “Butch” Wallace. A long-time trustee, Neil Wallace’s association with BWH dates back to 1966 when he served as a trustee of Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. The Wallaces’ gift provides inspiration for other trustees and community leaders to invest in the future success of BWH. “Since we first became involved with BWH, Butch and I have seen remarkable change, progress and challenge in health care. We strongly support BWH's mission of leadership in patient care, teaching and research. We sincerely hope that others will also support the 21st Century Capital Campaign to preserve and enhance the hospital’s mission,” said Neil Wallace. Other generous donors rose to the occasion last year as fundraising totals reached $24.5 million before FY00 came to a close on September 30. This was a slight increase from FY99’s record-setting pace and a triple-fold jump from five years ago (FY 96), when fundraising totals were $7.3 million. The success of BWH’s fundraising is further indicated in its return on investment (ROI), which means what it costs to raise $1. BWH touts an impressive $0.12/dollar ROI, substantially less than the national average of $0.21/dollar ROI. Equally impressive is the momentum gained for a capital campaign, which is now in its early phase before it becomes public in 2002. The campaign comes at a time when hospital needs are great and opportunities associated with the care of patients and their families and clinical and research growth need to be seized at an increasingly quicker pace. “The Wallaces’ gift is wonderful example of how hospital leadership sets the tone for others to invest in our institution, especially during an aggressive capital campaign,” said Joan Hadly, chief development officer at BWH. “On behalf of BWH, we thank the Wallaces and other long-standing hospital supporters who have and continue to invest in the hospital’s future,” said Jeffrey Otten, president of BWH. “They recognize the importance of philanthropy’s role in assuring the stability and growth of this remarkable institution. “Their gift is further testimony to the excellent work of our physicians, caregivers and staff who create an institution worthy of such contributions,” concluded Otten.
