"Thank you for calling BHW."
BWH continues to shine as a leading recipient of research funding from the National Institutes of Health, private foundations and corporate sponsors, as its FY 2000 funding total substantially surpasses its FY 1999 total. As of September 30, 2000, BWH had secured $197 million in competing awards—$51 million more than the hospital’s total of $146 million received in FY 99. This 35% increase in research awards is unprecedented at BWH, and is the highest in the last decade. “BWH has long been a leading recipient of research grants from the NIH,” said Keith Marcotte, vice president of research administration. “This substantial increase from NIH and other sponsors indicates how strongly the medical world respects the research performed here.” Marcotte explains that a large portion of this year’s total is due to a $23 million renewal of the Clinical Research Center grant. Even without this renewal, however, BWH’s funding would still be $28 million ahead of last year’s total—a 20% increase. “BWH is able to perform internationally acclaimed clinical, basic and epidemiological studies because of our success in funding. Likewise, the research totals speak to the outstanding talent and ability of our researchers in both the basic science and clinical arenas,” added Marcotte.
