BWH celebrates the 10th Annual Service Recognition When Bernard Lown, MD, stepped to the podium to accept the acknowledgement of his peers for 50 years of exceptional service, he gently reminded his colleagues that the profession of medicine was “a calling, not a business…a service, not a career track.” Lown, a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of the International Physicians against Nuclear War, an organization he co-founded in 1985, received a framed historic photograph of the 1913 faculty of the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. He stated that he “always believed never to whisper in the face of wrong.” His words to the group of physicians and allied health professionals who gathered in the Cabot Atrium highlighted the 10th Annual Service Recognition Awards on September 24 that recognized individuals with 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 years of service. Anthony Whittemore, MD, Chief Medical Officer and Mercedes Concepcion, MD, Recognition Event Chair, both noted the family friendly nature of the event. Children were invited to a special event in the Carrie Hall Conference Room during the award ceremony, where they were entertained by a story teller and day care services were provided by Parents in a Pinch. Jeffrey Otten, BWH President, began the event by attributing the hospital’s consistent presence on the U.S. News and World Report’s Annual Honor Roll as an assessment of the quality people focused on quality patient care at BWH. In a touching moment, the crowd honored Marc Pfeffer, MD, and recognized the contributions of his wife Janice Pfeffer, MD, who passed away earlier this year. Her mother and the couple’s children were on hand to accept the good wishes of the staff.
