The first major language and cultural adaptation of Our Bodies, Ourselves—the groundbreaking book about women’s health—was recently unveiled in the Boston area at BWH. This new edition, written in Spanish, is called Nuestros Cuerpos, Nuestras Vidas. Maria Morison Aguiar and Ester Shapiro, PhD, two of the book’s co-authors, and Judy Norsigian, co-founder, Boston Women’s Health Book Collective, were recognized at a BWH reception on August 9. BWH physicians were also on hand to talk to guests about how cultural differences can affect women’s health. “Our Bodies, Ourselves has been an invaluable tool in helping to educate women to take charge of their own health,” said JudyAnn Bigby, MD, director, Community Health Programs. Working with women in their own cultural context is important especially when dealing with issues specific to women’s health.” “This trailblazing book has helped empower women by demystifying human biology, and highlighting the important role of lifestyle factors in influencing health,” said JoAnn Manson, MD, DrPH, chief of the Division of Preventive Medicine, who served as a medical advisor for the original version of the book. As part of the celebration, Ileana Jimenez Garcia, director, Interpreter Service, presented 100 copies of Nuestros Cuerpos, Nuestras Vidas—which were donated by Partners HealthCare Community Benefits—to BWH and its affiliated health centers in Jamaica Plain, Dorchester, Mattapan and Roxbury.
