With the current summer heat, the mechanical systems that provide air conditioning to the hospital are heavily burdened. By turning off electrical lighting and equipment when it is not absolutely needed, staff can help substantially to keep the facility as comfortable as possible, while also reducing our energy usage and costs. Reducing our energy use also decreases associated carbon dioxide and other emissions at nearby power plants. The benefits can be surprising for such a simple strategy. For instance, if one-third of the hospital’s lighting is discretionarily turned off during the hottest weather, the need for the equivalent of 300 large window air conditioners worth of cooling can be spared. If you have comments or would like to learn about other ways the hospital is trying to maximize comfort and save energy, contact the Engineering Department at ext. 2-6721.
