The cornerstone of BWH's women's health program has long been its renowned obstetrical care, with the hospital welcoming more than 10,000 babies into the world each year. As this demand continues to climb, BWH has entered into a new collaborative venture with Partners HealthCare member, Newton-Wellesley Hospital.
The resulting "Brigham and Women's/Newton-Wellesley Obstetrics," will soon provide expectant parents with the advantages of an urban tertiary care medical center within a convenient community setting.
"Our collaboration with Newton-Wellesley Hospital is an important enhancement to our ob/gyn service line," said Robert Barbieri, MD, chair, Obstetrics and Gynecology at BWH. “The collaborative spirit of this partnership sets the stage for BWH to more conveniently provide our renowned maternal/fetal care to women in Boston's Western suburbs.”
The initial focus of the collaboration will be enhancing NWH's high risk maternity services. The relationship includes high-risk obstetricians, who will work at both BWH and NWH, and gynecology subspecialists in oncology, fertility and urogynecology who work at both hospitals. In addition, the BWH-MGH residency program in obstetrics and gynecology has committed to rotating residents to NWH starting in July 2003.
"Our new collaboration in maternity with BWH will benefit the community by enhancing the already excellent services we provide mothers and their newborns," said Thomas L. Beatty, Jr., MD, chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Newton-Wellesley.
