One of the hallmarks of BWH is its culture of caring, which patients say differentiates the hospital. This culture pertains not only to the delivery of outstanding clinical care to patients, but also the way that employees interact with patients and each other.
Over the last few years, BWH has implemented a number of programs and campaigns that focus on various aspects of its commitment to providing the best experience for all who come through our doors—patients, their families and fellow BWHers. To illustrate how these programs are intertwined, the hospital has created an umbrella graphic identity “Because We Care,” which connects each of the programs to BWH’s mission, vision and strategic commitments.
“Because We Care” embodies BWH’s values, speaking to all that employees do, and, perhaps more importantly, the way that they do it. It is the way they interact with patients and each other—the compassion they provide to an anxious patient, the warmth conveyed when answering the phone, the extra step taken to help a colleague succeed,or the way they support an employee who has made a mistake—that will distinguish BWH from its peers.
The “Because We Care” umbrella reflects BWH’s culture and is epitomized in the following programs and campaigns, which fall under its purview: Safety Matters, in which employees write openly and respectfully about patient care errors to prevent them from happening again Just Culture, which ensures employees are treated fairly if they make a mistake I CARE, in which employees adhere to a set of standards that align our community around a culture of service excellence The Brigham Way, recognizing employees for the many ways they go above and beyond Employee Pulse Surveys, which will provide a way for employees to continuously give feedback to leadership, and for leaders to hear and address employees’ concerns, with the goal of making BWH an even better place to work Why do BWHers consistently do these things? Because We Care.
