Pulmonary patient Joe Kelley chats with Anne Fuhlbrigge, MD, MS. Pulmonology was among the six BWH specialties that improved in rank this year.
For the 22nd consecutive year, BWH was selected for the U.S. News & World Report Honor Roll of America's Best Hospitals, ranking ninth on the national survey for the third year in a row. This year's Honor Roll highlights just 17 hospitals-out of nearly 5,000 nationwide-that scored near the top in at least six specialties.
In the grading of the best hospitals, BWH ranked among the top 10 in five specialties: Cancer, Cardiology and Heart Surgery, Gynecology, Nephrology and Rheumatology. BWH placed in the top 20 in Diabetes and Endocrinology, Geriatrics, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Orthopedics and Pulmonology.
"Our continued prominence on the Honor Roll of Best Hospitals is only possible because of employees' deep commitment to carrying out our precious mission," said BWH President Betsy Nabel, MD. "Your compassion, talent and unparalleled dedication to excellence drive our efforts to uncover new cures, strengthen our local and global communities, nurture the next generation of health professionals and provide personalized care for every patient who comes through our doors."
Six of BWH's specialties improved in rank this year: Cancer climbed from #5 to #4; Neurology and Neurosurgery rose from #19 to #13; Pulmonology progressed from #15 to #13; Geriatrics moved up one spot from #15 to #14; Urology moved from #45 to #38; and Ear, Nose & Throat went from not ranking last year to spot #49 this year. Cardiology and Heart Surgery remained at #5, Gynecology at #2, Nephrology at #5, and Rheumatology at #5. Approximately 150, or about 3 percent, of hospitals in the U.S. earned a national ranking in one or more of the 16 specialties.
Partners HealthCare sister hospitals also earned high honors. Mass. General Hospital ranked second on the Honor Roll, making Boston the only city in the country with two hospitals in the top 10 for the third consecutive year. McLean Hospital ranked fourth in Psychiatry, and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital placed sixth in Rehabilitation, the only rehabilitation hospital in New England to be named on the list.
"I am proud to be a member of this remarkable community that cares so deeply for our patients, their families and each other," added Nabel.
