Nursing students on moving day, 1962
In the spring of 1962, student nurses at the Peter Bent Brigham School of Nursing moved from their dorms in the Carrie M. Hall Residence to the Peter Bent Hotel across the street, which was purchased by the hospital. The relocation was prompted by the selling of the land on which the Carrie M. Hall Residence was built to Harvard University.
According to the 1961 Peter Bent Brigham Hospital Annual Report: "Firmly believing that the plans for the construction of the new hospital complex will materialize, and being convinced that its remaining land would adequately serve its needs should the hospital find it necessary to replace its own facilities with a modern separate hospital, the Board of Trustees agreed to sell a substantial part of its existing land and buildings to Harvard University to be conveyed in several parcels over a period of years."
The residence was torn down to make way for the Countway Medical Library, which continues to be an important resource for the BWH and Harvard Medical School communities alike. The building of the library coincided with a great deal of construction in the area at the time, not unlike today. "The library, the School of Public Health's nutrition and environmental hygiene buildings, presently under construction, and the skyscraper apartment house being built at the corner of Huntington and Longwood Avenues will completely change the appearance and character of the neighborhood," according to the report.
