BWH has joined the Massachusetts Hospital Association’s efforts to communicate the significant drawbacks posed to hospitals through the proposed Federal and State budget cuts. BWH Chief Medical Officer Andy Whittemore, MD, joined representatives from more than 70 other hospitals at a recent MHA-sponsored press conference. The March press conference was one of many efforts to gain momentum for a May 13 rally at the State House, scheduled to coincide with National Hospital Week.
The rally and all MHA-sponsored events leading up to it are designed to send an urgent message to Governor Romney and others about his budget’s detrimental implications to the medical centers across the Commonwealth.
“The press conference was held to make it very clear to our legislators that the full impact of the proposed budget cuts, both State and Federal, and the anticipated shortfall in the Uncompensated Care Pool will result in 80 percent of our hospitals running in the red,” said Whittemore.
“Specifically for BWH, the impact results in a loss of $18 million for ‘03 and $38 million for ‘04. The profound nature of these reductions will erode our entire operating margin and hinder our ability to deliver our current breadth of care,” added Whittemore.
