One year after construction began on the Massachusetts Mental Health Center Redevelopment Project, the first buildings are set to open their doors. The Fenwood Inn and Binney Street Buildings will open Nov. 7, following a Nov. 3 open house.
With six stories and 56,000 square feet, the Binney Street building encompasses clinical, research and administrative space for the Department of Mental Health. In addition to the services offered by the Department of Mental Health, it houses a small primary care clinic that will provide comprehensive care for Department of Mental Health clients and will be staffed by Brigham and Women’s Primary Care.
The Fenwood Inn, a three-story building at 20 Vining St., will provide outpatient services and transitional housing for up to 47 Department of Mental Health clients.
“We are pleased to welcome these Department of Mental Health programs back to our community as they promote care, recovery and resiliency for those who suffer with chronic, substantial mental illness,” said David Silbersweig, MD, chairman of the Department of Psychiatry.
Both the Fenwood Inn and the Binney Street building will carry the prestigious Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) for Healthcare silver certification, a rating system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council. The Binney Street building will have a partial green roof, making it aesthetically pleasing for occupants of the neighboring Shapiro Cardiovascular Center, and also contributing to the LEED silver certification. The roof will feature plants in containers specifically designed for rooftop use, improving storm water retention on site and filtering contaminants and pollutants from the runoff. The redevelopment project also incorporates landscaped open space.
The next portions of the Massachusetts Mental Health Redevelopment Project will be construction of the Roxbury Tenants of Harvard building and the Brigham Building for the Future. The 358,000-square-foot Brigham Building will combine research and clinical functions and include an underground parking garage and connections to the Shapiro Cardiovascular Center. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in the spring of 2013 and be completed in the summer of 2016.
Standing 15 stories tall, the residential Roxbury Tenants of Harvard Building will include 66 affordable rental units and 70 condominiums that will be a combination of affordable and market rate units. Construction will begin in the spring of 2013, with a move-in for new residents around the spring of 2015.
