The 2011 BWH United Way campaign kicks off Monday, Sept. 26, with an ice cream social and an opportunity for BWHers to make a difference for thousands of families in need who use services funded by United Way.
“We are hopeful that you can open your hearts once again and help support United Way so it can assist families who can’t afford basic necessities,” said Angelleen Peters-Lewis, PhD, MSN, RN, executive director, Women’s and Newborn’s Nursing and Clinical Services, who co-chairs this year’s campaign with Ed Habermehl, administrative director for the Division of Cardiac Surgery and Vascular Surgery.
This year’s campaign theme is “Helping Families along the Way” and it was selected from the submissions of slogan contest winners Amanda Chiaradonna, radiation therapist, and Gallie Joseph, financial counselor. The co-chairs have set a goal of raising $200,000—an all-time high—through the 2011 campaign.
“Our commitment to serving our community closely aligns us with United Way’s mission,” said Habermehl. “Each year, United Way helps thousands of children and families with an array of services including after-school activities, summer camps and fuel assistance programs, just to name a few.”
Ice cream socials are among many opportunities employees will have to learn about the campaign, explained Peters-Lewis.
“The United Way rolling cart will make its way around the hospital spreading information about ways to donate,” said Peters-Lewis.
In addition, the three-week campaign will feature dozens of raffle prizes for those who donate. Prizes include gift certificates, a mountain bike, a flat-screen TV and free parking at BWH. The grand prize is airfare for two anywhere in the continental U.S.
“Donation to this year’s campaign will be easy,” said Habermehl. “Beginning next week, you’ll receive direct, personalized e-mails with a link to your own giving page, simplifying online donations through payroll deduction, credit card or check.”
Employees who opt out will not receive additional e-mails, and employees who donate through the online mechanism will not receive any follow-up e-mails. Printed pledge cards also will be available throughout the campaign.
