Monica Rivera and Bhrunil Patel
The 2011 Deland Fellows Monica Rivera, MD, MPH, and Bhrunil Patel, MHA, have been at BWH for just two months, but they already feel right at home.
“Everyone has been so welcoming, and it’s such a privilege to be able to work in an organization that is so committed to education, research and health care delivery,” said Rivera, a physician who attended Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey in Mexico and who recently earned her MPH from Harvard School of Public Health.
Patel agreed. “So far, it’s been great to have had the opportunity to meet with hospital leaders and get to know their roles and responsibilities and understand the different dynamics that go into delivering care here at the Brigham,” he said.
A year-long program, the BWH Deland Fellowship prepares professionals to become health care leaders. Over the next year, both Rivera and Patel will work closely on a number of projects and see first-hand how a hospital runs. Rivera will be paired up with Sharon Vitti, vice president of Women’s Health and Ambulatory Services, and Patel with Julia Sinclair, vice president of Clinical Services for Emergency Medicine, Neurology, Psychiatry and Pathology.
“It’s an exciting time to be in health care,” said Rivera. “With changes to health care policy in the U.S., there will also be opportunities to improve the patient experience. I’m looking forward to being part of the hospital’s continuous work to be at the forefront of these changes.”
Rivera worked most recently for Proeza, an international company based in Mexico, where she was director of the company’s preventive medicine and wellness programs. Patel joins BWH from Hennepin Country Medical Center in Minneapolis, where he served as a performance measurement and improvement administrative resident.
“Having the experience to work with clinicians will provide me with a deep understanding on the whole notion of the patient care team and the collaborative effort that goes into improving health care delivery,” said Patel, who earned his master’s in health care administration from the University of Minnesota in May.
