Caitlin Johnson, Ruth Hesse, Kimberly DelRosso and Ann Harrington participate in the Walking Club.
Whether it’s taking the stairs rather than the elevator, or stepping out of her unit to walk along the Pike, Infusion Clinic Nurse Karen Heraty, RN, never misses an opportunity to add some exercise to her day.
The newly-established BWH Employee Walking Club is making it even easier for her to incorporate that exercise and meet new people.
“The walking club is a fantastic idea,” said Heraty, who along with many other employees, came out recently to walk a mile-long course along the Kevin W. Fitzgerald Park behind One Brigham Circle. “It allows me to continue doing something for my health while meeting new people.”
An initiative by the Cardiovascular Wellness Service, the club continues to provide a way for staff to take a break during the day and get some exercise.
“We started last fall and have gotten positive responses from members. So far, we have about 250 registered walkers,” said Caitlin Johnson, Cardiovascular Wellness Service coordinator.
There are several ways to take advantage of this program. Participants can join Cardiovascular Wellness Service staff on the Tower Mezzanine for a 15- to 20-minute walk at noon on designated days. Employees who are unable to attend scheduled walks are encouraged to create their own walking club groups so they can walk at a time that is convenient for them.
As part of the club, the Cardiovascular Wellness Service provides walkers with support, including outdoor walking routes around the Longwood Medical Area, a free T-shirt, pedometers and online tools to track progress.
“Adding a little exercise to your day, even if it’s just 20 minutes, is great for your health. And if you bring some friends along, you’ll be doing a good thing for them too,” said Annette Rubin, director of the Cardiovascular Wellness Service.
