BWH surgeon Atul Gawande, MD, MPH, was among the American Society of Magazine Editors’ 2011 National Magazine Awards winners for his New Yorker article, “Letting Go,” which examines what medicine should do when it can’t save a life.
The Golden Elephant awards, also known as the “Ellies,” are considered the most prestigious awards in the industry and are often described as the equivalent in the magazine world to the Pulitzer Prize in the newspaper world.
This is Gawande’s second National Magazine Award.
Gawande’s story, “Letting Go,” was published last August and was chosen for best writing in the “Public Interest” category. The category honors magazine journalism that illustrates issues of local and national importance. The award was presented during a ceremony in New York City last month.
Gawande has received many accolades throughout his career for his writing and has published three books, including the bestseller “The Checklist Manifesto.”
