Production Aide Willie Samuel and Guest Service Attendant Sharon Arzu, both of the Department of Food Service, celebrate 25 years of service.
For Silvia Sumale, a research assistant in the Clinical Research Center, BWH has been more than a workplace for the past 25 years—it has been a second home.
“The Brigham has been an opportunity for me to achieve a lot of things that I probably wouldn’t have been able to do in my country,” said Sumale, who is originally from Guatemala. “I feel very blessed having landed in this hospital.”
Sumale and more than 400 BWHers were recognized at the Service Awards Ceremony in Cabot Atrium on June 9. The annual event honored BWH employees for their years of service to the institution in increments of five years, up to 45 years.
“We could not be the world class academic medical center we are today without your dedication, your talent and your constant willingness to do everything possible for the patients we serve— whether you work in a research lab, as a care provider, in an administrative role or in support services,” said BWH President Betsy Nabel, MD, in her opening remarks.
The celebration really took off when Mairead Hickey, PhD, RN, FAHA, executive vice president and chief operating officer, and Sanjay Pathak, MBA, MPH, vice president of Surgical Services and Imaging, guided the audience on a trip down memory lane. Beginning with the five-year employees, they recounted milestones and major events—both at BWH and worldwide—that occurred at each five-year interval. The audience laughed and sang along to songs from decades past, as an announcer read off the names of employees who have been at BWH for 20 or more years and welcomed them to the front of the room to pose for a picture with Nabel.
The celebration concluded when Nanon Winslow, a neurodiagnostic specialist in the EEG Laboratory, was recognized for 45 years of service. During her time at BWH, Winslow has also served as the chief technologist and technical director for EMG and EEG. She was also the proud recipient of the first-ever Edward Bromfield Award for patient care, teaching and research.
