Lisa McKenna treats every task she performs as a unit coordinator on Tower 15C with equal importance, whether it is answering questions for fellow colleagues, updating each patient’s information board so they know who is caring for them or just saying hello to visitors.
“She does all of this with a smile,” said Dawn McPherson, a patient care assistant on her unit. “She is an excellent role model and takes pride in her work.”
For her commitment to excellence, McKenna was recognized with this year’s Administrative Support for Patient Care Areas Award during a ceremony that honored Patient Care Services administrative staff across BWH.
“The work that each one of you does every day is a key part of what allows us to deliver the best and most compassionate care to our patients,” said Jackie Somerville, PhD, RN, senior vice president of Patient Care Services and chief nursing officer. “I thank you for your commitment.”
Now in its second year, the award celebrates the contributions of Patient Care Services administrative staff. This year, the winner was selected from among 15 other nominees.
After receiving the award, McKenna, who has worked at BWH since 2005, thanked her colleagues for their support.
“This award is not just for me; it represents all the hard work unit coordinators do every day,” she told the audience, who packed Bornstein Amphitheater. “I also thank all my coworkers on Tower 15, who help me be the best person I can be.”
Leo Buckley Jr., executive director of Business Services for Patient Care Services, also addressed the audience and updated the BWH community on the department’s initiative to help promote Patient Care Services administrative staff to seek educational advancement opportunities through the National Association of Health Unit Coordinators.
“I’m happy to inform you that it’s been a success,” he told the audience. “Many of you have taken the opportunity to earn your unit coordinator certification, and that says a lot about your commitment to advancing your profession and continuing to be a part of this great care team.”
